NATIONAL Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) general secretary Pg Hj Mohiddin Pg Badarudin yesterday said that a referee course at next week’s Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-14 Regional Festival of Football in Brunei can be a platform to produce the best referees in ASEAN.
Fifteen young referees from eight Southeast Asian countries — four from hosts Brunei, two from Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Vietnam and one each from Singapore, Laos and Thailand — will take part in the AFC Referee Preparatory Course that will conclude on Sunday.
The festival will kick off at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas on Tuesday.
“I am made to understand that from this type of course, future referees will be produced up to the level of officiating and refereeing World Cup games,” said Pg Hj Mohiddin in his welcoming speech yesterday.
“This course is your first chapter as a referee. Hopefully, one day you will represent the best of referees from the ASEAN region, so I hope all of you are ready and prepared to be challenged, inspired and as well as excited by this opportunity,” added the newly appointed general secretary.
The five-day course will be conducted by AFC Referee Instructor and Assessor Ismail Adnan Ismail Alhafi from Jordan and AFC Referee Instructor Hakan Anaz from Australia.
“We are honoured to have two highly credited gentlemen in the refereeing world as our course assessors, and with their extensive and vast knowledge in refereeing, they will surely impart to you all that is needed for you to progress to a higher level and aim to ensure that you will be updated the latest updates in the Laws of the Game,” Pg Hj Mohiddin continued.
“I also hope that all of you can gain as much as you can in preparation for the challenging task ahead, which is to be the festival’s official referees,” he added.
Also in attendance at the launching of the course were AFC festival manager Dr Shamil Kamil Mohammed and NFABD executive members.
