Brunei Darussalam have upped the intensity of their training for next week’s AFF Suzuki Cup qualifying tournament in Cambodia after players from DPMM FC joined the squad.
Ten players from the club, which plays in the S-League, teamed up with the rest of the squad who have been in full-time training since June.
Team manager Hj Mohd Noor Hj Hamid said that the inclusion of the DPMM FC players had given the side a timely boost.
“Our national team’s preparation for the qualifiers is on track now that all the players are in training,” he told The Brunei Times.
“I hope we can perform well with this squad since they are experienced players and will be able to share their knowledge with the others.”
The 25-man squad will go into a training camp in Kuala Lumpur and play warm-up matches against the Malaysia under-22 team before heading to Phnom Penh.
Hj Mohd Noor said that interim national coach Mike Wong would be looking for good performances and teamwork in the friendlies.
“The coach has been working more on the players’ movement, how well they gel with each other and also the finishing for the strikers,” he said.
“It will be a trial for the players in the team and to give them a confidence boost because our opponents in the qualifiers are very tough.”
The Wasps meet Timor Leste on October 15 before facing Cambodia three days later.
They will then complete the qualifiers against Laos on October 21.
The top team will advance into Group B of the AFF Suzuki Cup where they will play Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam.
“With only one slot up for grabs, we have to work very hard in order to qualify for the final round,” added Hj Mohd Noor.
