National Football team leaves for Kuching

The Brunei Darussalam National Football team will leave for Kuching on Monday 31st  October 2016 to participate in the newly formed cup tournament called the AFC Solidarity Cup 2016 held in Kuching, Sarawak. The tournament was initiated by the Asian Football Confederation as a replacement for the AFC Challenge Cup which was played for the last time in 2014. A maximum of nine teams were eligible to compete in this edition of the tournament. Six teams were eligible to compete after losing in the first round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup / 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualificationcompetition, while three teams were eligible to compete after losing in the play-off round 2 of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification competition. After Pakistan and Bangladesh withdrew, only seven teams will compete in the tournament.

The 30-man strong team is led by Team Manager, Ah Chua bin Bangau, and will be coached by Head Coach, Kwon Oh-Son. Brunei Darussalam are placed in Group A with 186th ranked Timor Leste and 188th ranked Nepal, where only the top two out of the three will see them qualify to knockout stage. In Group B, will see the likes of Sri Lanka, Macau, Mongolia and Laos to vie for top two berth to go for the knock out stage. Brunei Darussalam’s first match will be on Wednesday, 2nd November 2016 against Timor Leste at the Sarawak Stadium, kicking off at 7:30pm. To bless the sending off, a recital of the Doa Selamat was read at the NFABD House before the national team’s departure.
