Kota Ranger’s Abu Bakar Mahari (L) and Kota Ranger manager Mohamad Azmi Azizul embrace after the striker scored four goals in their 6-0 win over Menglait in a DST Super League game at the Tutong Sports Complex tonight.
ABU Bakar Mahari fired Kota Ranger to the top of the DST Super League after scoring four goals in their 6-0 win against Menglait tonight.
The former national team and DPMM FC striker was in unstoppable form at the Tutong Sports Complex, scoring his first goal after a volley from the edge of the box in the 19th minute of the first game of the season for both sides.
Md Syazwi Awg Mohin opened the floodgates with a second minute goal, and after Abu made it 2-0, it was all one-way traffic after that.
Though Kota Ranger were only able to take a two-goal lead into the break, they were the dominant side throughout the first half and their organized midfield prevented Menglait from enjoying time on the ball.
Penning their opponents in their own half, Kota Ranger made it 3-0 in the 50th minute when Tutong-native Abu scored after a cut-back from the right.
He grabbed his hat-trick in the 69th minute after chipping Menglait goalkeeper Mohd Alaisa Fadillah Rosli and scored his best goal of the game with a long-range strike in the 83rd minute, with Md Fadzil Ismail completing the rout after dribbling past two players on the right to calmly slot home.
“My aim this season is to be the league’s top scorer,” said Abu, who was Kota Ranger’s top scorer last season with six goals.
“I was the target man tonight and my teammates cut a lot of balls back for me, which was the strategy.
“I hope we can win the league this season, but I know there will be tough competition from teams like MS ABDB (the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Sports Council), Kasuka and Indera,” he added.
