The national Under-20 futsal team will be competing in the inaugural Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Futsal Under-20 Championship in Thailand later this month.

The team will be leaving to Bangkok on Tuesday, where they will play a warm-up match against Uzbekistan and several Thai sides before starting the May 16-26 tournament.

Brunei have been drawn with hosts Thailand, Iraq, Malaysia, Bahrain and Afghanistan in Group A, and the group winners and runners-up from each of the four groups will progress to the knockout stage (quarter-finals) of the 21-team tournament.

Futsal will be included in the Youth Olympics for the first time during next year’s edition in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the top-two teams at the AFC Futsal Under-20 Championship will book a berth in the global tournament.

The team’s selection process started in January, with national futsal coach Qusmaini Noor Hj Rusli conducting trials for players from all four districts before selecting more than 200 players.

The number was cut to 70, 40 and 25 before the Malaysian finalised the list of 16 players for Bangkok.

Twenty-five players started intensive training on February 20 and underwent a 21-day strength and power training program before working on the fundamentals and tactics.

The team is currently playing in the Brunei Futsal League, and they top the eight-team standings with three wins from three games.

They produced a 6-3 victory over defending champions Kota Junior in their last game on Sunday, the win all the more impressive since the titleholders had not tasted defeat for more than two years prior to the match.

Qusmaini also had his players undergo a three-day team-building exercise last month to improve their mental strength, with the highlight of the exercise an exhausting 15km kayaking trip from Serasa to Pelumpong Island.

“My goal is to implement a new DNA for Brunei futsal… I want to create intelligent players within this new generation of futsal players,” he said during a media session today.

“All the teams in this tournament are new as this is the first time this competition is being held, and in my opinion, AFC are organising the tournament to popularise futsal in Asia as well as to scout players for the senior team,” added the coach.

Brunei start their campaign against Afghanistan on May 16 before facing Iraq on May 17 and hosts Thailand on May 18. The team meet Bahrain on May 19 before finishing group stage play against Malaysia on May 20.

“I told the players not to be afraid when we face Thailand and just play as they do normally. I want to take it game by game,” Qusmaini added.
