AFGHANISTAN beat Brunei 14-1 in the first match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-20 Futsal Championship for both teams in Bangkok tonight.

Four goals in the first 11 minutes helped put Afghanistan 4-1 up on the break and well on their way to the convincing win, but the national Under-20 futsal team will be aiming to bounce back when they meet Iraq in their second game of the inaugural tournament at 6pm (Brunei time) tomorrow.

National futsal coach Qusmaini Noor Hj Rusli told his players that a strong start would be crucial to a good result tonight, but he admitted the team could not defend for long against their bigger and technically better opponents.

“We lost focus at the start of the game and allowed our opponents early goals,” he said.

“The Afghanistan players are bigger and more physical.

“Another reason we lost was because we did not convert the seven chances that we had to score in the second half, and our goalkeepers were also below their real level.

“We will try our best to correct all our mistakes and close down space against Iraq tomorrow,” added the coach. Afghanistan moved the ball around with ease and used their size to keep Brunei at bay.

Ali Jafari opened the scoring in the fourth minutes with a free-kick, and two goals from Hassan Ali Jafari and Jawad Haidari - both in the seventh minute - then put Afghanistan 3-0 up.

Farzad Mahmoodi’s long-range strike made it 4-0 but captain Mohd Radhi Raduan pulled one back with a spectacular long-range effort of his own seconds before the break.

However, a quick blast of three goals from Jawad in the first five minutes of the second half put Afghanistan 7-1 up, and their defensive organisation meant Brunei were trapped inside their own half for much of the game and could only rely on counter-attacks to score.

Brunei’s Abdul Azim Boll Hassan and Muhammad Nasu’rul Wafiy Hj Hassan had several good chances to cut the deficit but missed them all.

Morteza Haidari made it 8-1 after a one-on-one with Brunei’s goalkeeper and a quick brace from Mohammad Wahid Samimi, who scored twice in the 29th minute, made it 10-1 for Afghanistan, who did well to close down space.

Jawad scored his fifth and sixth goals of the game soon after, and strikes from Morteza Sharif Zada and Abbas Ahmadi completed the scoring.

Yesterday’s other Group A games saw Iraq beat Bahrain 4-1 and hosts Thailand defeat Malaysia 5-2.

Brunei face hosts Thailand on Thursday, Bahrain on Friday and close out their group stage play against Malaysia on Saturday.
