Strong performance from Brunei
Friday, May 19, 2017

Brunei produced their best performance of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-20 Futsal Championship in Bangkok after a strong second half saw them go down fighting in a 4-3 loss to Bahrain.

It was their highest scoring game so far after a 14-1 loss to Afghanistan in their first game on Tuesday, a 6-1 loss to Iraq on Wednesday and a 10-0 loss to hosts Thailand on Thursday - all of which were the team’s first official international games.

The team pressed higher up the court and moved the ball around well after winning back possession, enjoying more time on the ball and several spells of sustained pressure in the second half - when they twice came back from two-goal deficits.

Despite showing more threat on attack, Brunei were once again guilty of missing golden opportunities to score and could have won the game had the national players been sharper in front of goal.

On the other end of the court, both national goalkeepers - Muhammad Nadziran Hj Abd Mutalib in the first half and Ak Muhammad Asadullah Shafee Pg Hj Asaduzzaman in the second half - came up with crucial blocks.

“There were some positive changes in this game,” said national futsal coach Qusmaini Noor Hj Rusli.

“We tried to press our opponents from the first minute until the end with the hope that they would make some misplaced passes.

“Our players were also braver today when it came to ball possession during attack.

“They missed many open chances and I hope they will come up with a better quality performance in our last game tomorrow (against Malaysia),” he added.

Though they trailed as early as the second minute when Ali Husain netted with a low strike after a counter-attack, Brunei did not lose focus and equalised in the 11th minute when Abdul Azim Boll Hassan scored after receiving a pass from Muhammad Hisyamuddin Mohd Zaini.

However, Bahrain regained the lead a minute later when Sadeq Ahmad cut in from the left and unleashed a vicious shot which found the back of the net.

Bahrain were not as deadly in front of goal as Brunei’s previous three opponents and were unable to create space inside the attacking third, instead focusing on shooting from distance - and hitting the post five times in the second half.

Bahrain’s Ebrahim Aldoseri made it 3-1 in the first minute of the second half, but Brunei used the two-goal deficit as motivation to work harder.

Winning more second halls, Brunei pushed Bahrain into their own half and pulled back to 3-2 when Muhammad Abdul Khaaliq Hj Lazim scored after a counter-attack in the 27th minute.

Ali made it 4-2 when he scored with a long-range effort when Brunei’s defence failed to close him down, and Qusmaini reacted by replacing goalkeeper Ak Muhammad Asadullah Shafee with an outfield player to put more men on the ball.

The strategy paid off when Azim stole the ball on the right and delivered a square ball to Nazirul Haziq Adeni to score three minutes before the end, and if not for their numerous missed opportunities, Brunei could have been celebrating their first win of the tournament.

The day’s other games saw hosts Thailand beat Afghanistan 8-1 and Iraq beat Malaysia 4-2.

Thailand and Iraq have won all four of their Group A games and will progress into the quarter-finals as the top two teams in the group.

They meet each other at 8pm (Brunei time) today, but with Thailand enjoying a superior goal difference of 13, are almost certain to top the group.

Persembahan yang kuat dari Brunei
Jumaat, Mei 19 2017
