Tabuan A are not putting any pressure on themselves to defend their National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) Under-16 Elite Youth Cup title in tomorrow night’s final against Tabuan B.
The national Under-15 team, which leads the NFABD Under-16 Youth League, head into the 8.30pm final at the Balapan Track & Field as favourites against their Under-14 counterparts after beating them in both their meetings in the league and cup this season.
And not only did they defeat Projek Ikan Pusu 4-0 in Wednesday’s semi-final, the team has been boosted by the country’s best-ever showing at the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-15 Championship which ran from July 7-22 in Thailand.
The side finished with five points from five games and created history when beating Cambodia 2-0 on July 16 to record the country’s maiden win in the tournament.
However, Tabuan A assistant coach Muhd Edie Fakhri Ajun Abdullah (pic R) said he wants his players to put thoughts of both competitions aside.
“We told the players to concentrate on the final and not think about the AFF Under-15 Championship or the league…. We just need to play our normal game, and we should be alright,” he said.
“We feel we have already reached our target – which was to reach the final.
“We created a lot of chances and had more possession against PIP, so we hope we can maintain that during the final,” he added.
Having lost both games against Tabuan A this year, 4-0 in the NFABD Under-16 Youth League on March 12 and 1-0 in the NFABD Under-16 Elite Youth Cup on April 30, a win for Tabuan B in tomorrow’s final will be considered an upset.
But despite the previous losses, Tabuan B head coach Mohd Ikhmarol Izzat Hj Omar (pic L) – whose side beat Rimba Star 2-1 in their semi-final – promised to give Tabuan A a good fight.
“We will play a good, competitive match,” he said.
“The losses were because the players were not used to playing each other yet… But now they have played together longer, I am sure they will play with better teamwork in the final.”
The final kicks off at 8.30pm and entrance is free.
