RICO Zulkarnain is looking forward to returning to Brunei as the Kuantan Rangers attempt to win the Brunei Futsal League (BFL) this week.
With the league reaching its climax this weekend, all the matches will be played at the Indoor Stadium of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Futsal superstar Rico became the first import to play in a Brunei futsal league when he laced up for Kuantan Rangers against Kota Junior on July 28. According to his website “just in 2016 alone, five of Rico’s goals have gone viral on the Internet and have amassed over 200+ million views worldwide and counting.”
Kuantan Rangers are currently third in the 10-team BFL with 16 points, with Miri FA – the other invitational team – second with 17 points and Arbisyam on top with 18 points. Kuantan Rangers have two games in hand over Miri FA and Arbisyam, and only have to win two of their three games in this week’s final round of games to be crowned champions.
Though Rico only played three games for Kuantan Rangers when they competed in the BFL two weeks ago, all of the matches ending in wins for the Malaysian side.
“Even though I played just a few minutes each game to allow the other players to gain experience, I think the Brunei supporters got a small taste of what is to come in the next three games,” Rico said last week.
“I think you guys have good players, but tactically, a lot of work needs to be done. I think you can see the difference in terms of the way we play since I’ve arrived. Now we are a futsal team playing attractive futsal.
“Even the Brunei supporters are starting to really enjoy watching our games, because the way we play is entertaining.
“The coaches and players at Kuantan Rangers are all working towards the same goal to move forward, which is another great factor in the development of the team.
“I think the league is organised good, but each team needs to play each other at least twice. Also, the supporters are amazing!,” he added.
Kuantan Rangers take on Najip FT in their first game at 9pm on Friday. They then face Eagle Blues at 9pm on Saturday before the final match of the tournament, a potential title-decider against Arbisyam at 8pm on Sunday.
