The national Under-18 team left today to Japan for a training tour ahead of their Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-18 Championship in Myanmar next month.
Present at the Brunei International Airport to wish the team farewell was National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) Acting Vice President Hj Madli Mohd Yussof and other NFABD officials.
While in Japan, the team will play friendly matches against Japan Professional League 1st Division (J1) youth teams from Cerezo Osaka and Vissel Kobe and will also participate in cultural exchange programs.
“Play with confidence and make the country proud,” Hj Madli advised the team.
“You have been given the opportunity to represent your country, so give it 100 per cent.
“Follow your coaches’ orders and take care of your health,” he added.
Drawn in Group B, Brunei will play hosts Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines at the September 4-7 AFF Under-18 Championship in Yangon, Myanmar.
National Under-18 coach Takao Fujiwara is confident the training tour in Japan will better prepare his players for the AFF Under-18 Championship.
“We will prepare better when we are in Japan, and I hope some of the players can improve their standard when they are there,” said Fujiwara.
“This team has been together for six months and I hope we will do well in Myanmar,” he added.
