BRUNEI came from behind to beat the Philippines 3-2 in their first game of the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Under-18 Championship in Yangon, Myanmar, today.
The Philippines’ Mariano Jr. Mallari Suba put his team in front in the 32nd minute at the Thuwanna Stadium only for Brunei’s Abdul Mateen Said to answer back a minute later.
Asyraffahmi Norsamri made it 2-1 to Brunei in the 49th minute but Palogan Tacardon equalised five minutes later.
In the end, Wadud Ramli’s 65th minute goal proved to be the difference between the two sides in the tight Group B tie.
“We’re happy to have won our first game and it shows that all the hard work we’ve put in during training has paid off,” said Brunei’s team manager Zulkifli Hj Duraman.
Coached by Japanese Takao Fujiwara, Brunei will now face Vietnam on Thursday, hosts Myanmar on Saturday and Indonesia next Wednesday.
The team, which has been together for six months, will also be competing in next month’s Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-19 Championship qualifiers in South Korea.
